#LARGE GROUP MODERATION

Strengthening Berlin's skilled trades

Together with the Berlin Chamber of Crafts, we developed a package of measures to strengthen Berlin’s skilled trades in the #WorldCafé – and brought it directly into the discussion with the Senate.

The problem

The Berlin Chamber of Skilled Crafts and the Berlin Senate want to continue their long-standing cooperation and adopt a package of measures to strengthen the skilled crafts sector. The aim is to specifically promote the importance of skilled crafts in the city and address key challenges.

The goal

The most important demands are to be developed in a workshop and then presented to the Senator for Economic Affairs. The perspectives of various stakeholders will be taken into account, including representatives of Berlin’s skilled trades, the Berlin Chamber of Skilled Trades, the guilds, and the Senate Administration.

The implementation

Around 60 representatives from the skilled trades, the Chamber of Skilled Trades, and the Senate Administration came together for the one-day kickoff workshop. The format was a World Café, which provided space for intensive discussions on key topics.

At several stations, the participants worked in groups on predefined topics. Each station was led by an expert moderator whom we had trained in advance in methodological approaches and moderation techniques. The discussions were clearly structured, and the results were recorded in prepared working templates:

Vision: Where should Berlin’s skilled trades be in the future?
Challenges: What hurdles need to be overcome?
Measures: What concrete steps are necessary?
Responsibilities: Who will contribute to implementation?

At the end of the workshop, the key demands were discussed with the president of the Chamber of Crafts and the Berlin Senator for Economic Affairs.

Together with representatives of the Chamber of Crafts, we then formulated the results into concise demands, which were presented to the House of Representatives in the form of handy claims for a vote.
